GSTN’s 4 November 2026 advisory asks taxpayers, transport software providers, GST Suvidha Providers and API integrators to prepare for longer e-way bill identifiers. The proposed format would increase a standard e-way bill number from 12 to 14 digits and a consolidated e-way bill number from 10 to 11 digits. GSTN identifies 1 January 2027 as the proposed start date.
Businesses that store, print, import or validate these numbers should check every step from e-way bill generation to dispatch, transport reconciliation and reporting. Review database field lengths, fixed-length validation, spreadsheet imports, printed documents and exchanges between your ERP and logistics systems. Make sure revised checks can handle existing records alongside the new format during the transition.
GSTN says the changes will be released for sandbox testing and further details will appear on the e-way bill portal. Use those specifications for production changes and run a test covering standard and consolidated documents before the planned switch.
